Physiotherapy / Rehabilitation Hydrotherapy | Acupuncture | Laser
Just like people our pets can suffer from pain and discomfort. A large proportion of dogs over the age of five have joint, ligament and/or back issues. Physical therapy is a huge part of keeping us all moving comfortably. Many patients, people and animals can benefit from exercises and treatments to improve function, especially post-surgical, arthritic or overweight patients. Fit Pet is here to help the animals in Bermuda to improve their mobility whether the issue stems from damaged joints, ligaments, neurologic disease or obesity. We are here to try and improve your pets health with complementary treatments, including hydrotherapy, acupuncture, laser therapy and home exercise programs.
Hydrotherapy at Fit Pet, has a specialized underwater treadmill. This equipment provides a unique opportunity to maintain and build the same muscles used for walking, running and general activity. The water provides buoyancy taking the weight off the joints while exercising, making it more comfortable for your pet to use its full range of motion comfortably. We provide a safe temperature regulated environment while monitoring movement to improve mobility, aid in weight loss and increase muscle tone for normal movement. Why is this better than swimming? Our pets as well behaved as they can be, aren’t usually very responsive to sentences like, “make slow gentle strokes in the water”. We often see dogs with arthritis, other joint or neurologic issues becoming sore after swimming due to overextending their joints and straining their muscles. The muscles used for swimming are also predominantly different groups than that of walking. So while good exercise it doesn’t usually help dogs who have issues with walking.
Conditions for which we use Hydrotherapy:

This treatment has been proven to increase energy in the mitochondria (the power house of the cells) helping to improve healing times and has benefit of modulating pain and reducing inflammation in areas being treated. Laser treatments are tailored to each patient’s need and area being treated, dose levels are calculated for the individual.
Many patients will benefit from a combination of therapies and treatments will be based on the individuals need as well as response to treatments. FitPet will assess your pet and tailor treatments and therapies for their specific needs and will liaise with their
Veterinarian as needed.

Max is our 13 year old Yorkshire Terrier and it seems like Dr. Laura has been a part of our family for all of those 13 years. Dr. Laura has always been one of Max’s primary vets but she’s so much more than that. When Max was hardly a year old he sustained a neck injury that had us flying him to Boston for a neurological evaluation. Luckily, it was nothing that a few months of Metacam couldn’t fix but with that injury came years of neck and back pain that Dr. Laura has been able to keep manageable for our pup. Her acupuncture and laser treatment have been Godsends to keep Max comfortable and continuing with his life as best as a 13 year old little man can do. Dr. Laura has always been so caring and professional with Max and I am a firm believer that the acupuncture and laser treatments have really helped him stay more comfortable as he ages. Dr. Laura is one of the only vets who has ever been able to diagnose where Max is uncomfortable and always directs her treatments to those specific areas. We don’t know what we would do without her. Her treatments have made all of our lives that much more manageable.

Mumbles our 13 year old Golden retriever started getting sever arthritis in his hips from the age of 11. He had good days and bad days but during the bad days despite being on pain meds, he couldn’t get up on his own and got around with a lot of difficulty. This was hard to see as Mumbles lived for his walks and had a great sense of adventure. We were eventually referred to Dr Laura to try out some acupuncture and laser therapy. Dr Laura was very professional and explained everything to us and answered all our questions. Her calm and caring nature put Mumbles at ease and he actually really enjoyed his sessions. We continued with weekly sessions as we saw a marked difference in his ability to get around and after a few weeks, he even started to get up the stairs again which he had not attempted in years! Dr Laura is the most kind, gentle and caring vet you could ask for. She cared for our beloved boy right till the end and for that we will forever be grateful. She really is a special vet and we will be sure to go back to her when we decide to welcome another guy into our lives.
